Why Most Indian SMBs Overpay for WhatsApp Automation
Most Indian business owners believe they must sign up for expensive third-party Business Solution Providers (BSPs) like Wati, Interakt, or AiSensy to use WhatsApp automation. These platforms typically charge a hefty monthly subscription (₹2,500 to ₹8,000/month) plus a markup on every single conversation.
According to Meta’s official developer documentation, the WhatsApp Business Cloud API is hosted directly on Meta’s global infrastructure with zero server hosting fees and zero monthly software subscription costs. You pay only Meta’s exact wholesale conversation rates.
If your business sends 10,000 customer notifications a month, cutting out the middleman saves over ₹35,000 annually while giving you complete engineering control over your customer data.
Prerequisites for Indian Businesses
Before touching the Meta Developer Console, gather these required assets:
- A Clean Phone Number: An active SIM card that is not currently registered on any personal or business WhatsApp mobile app. Virtual VoIP numbers are rejected by Meta’s Indian SMS gateway; use an Airtel, Jio, or Vi prepaid/postpaid SIM.
- GST Registration Certificate (GSTIN): Meta requires official government business verification before unlocking higher messaging tiers.
- Official Domain Email: Submitting a
@gmail.comor@yahoo.comaddress will cause automated rejection during Business Manager verification.
Step 1: Create Meta Developer Account & App
- Navigate to the Meta for Developers portal (
developers.facebook.com) and log in with your primary Facebook credentials. - Click My Apps → Create App.
- Select Other as the use case, then choose Business as the app type.
- Set your Display Name to your registered business name (e.g.,
Acme Retail Automation) and connect your existing Meta Business Account. - On the App Dashboard, locate WhatsApp and click Set Up.
Step 2: Configure System User & Permanent Access Token
By default, Meta provides a temporary access token that expires after 24 hours. Using this in a production webhook will silently break your entire communication pipeline overnight.
- Open your Meta Business Suite → Settings → Users → System Users.
- Click Add, assign the role Admin System User, and name it
n8n-automation-engine. - Click Generate New Token, select your WhatsApp Business App, and check the following required scopes:
whatsapp_business_messagingwhatsapp_business_management
- Set token expiration to Never. Copy this token immediately and store it securely in your password manager.

Step 3: Register and Verify Your Indian Phone Number
In your WhatsApp App Dashboard under API Setup:
- Scroll to Step 5: Add a phone number.
- Enter your company display name and select your timezone (
Asia/Kolkata). - Enter your 10-digit Indian phone number with country code
+91. - Choose SMS for verification. Enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile device.
- Meta will generate a unique
Phone Number IDandWABA ID(WhatsApp Business Account ID). Record both values.
curl -X GET "https://graph.facebook.com/v21.0/YOUR_PHONE_NUMBER_ID"
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_PERMANENT_ACCESS_TOKEN"
Step 4: Dispatching Your First Production Message
To test outbound delivery, send a standardized pre-approved template message using Meta’s Graph API:
curl -X POST "https://graph.facebook.com/v21.0/YOUR_PHONE_NUMBER_ID/messages"
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_PERMANENT_ACCESS_TOKEN"
-H "Content-Type: application/json"
-d '{
"messaging_product": "whatsapp",
"to": "919876543210",
"type": "template",
"template": {
"name": "hello_world",
"language": { "code": "en_US" }
}
}'
According to Meta’s API response status, a successful transmission returns a JSON object containing messages: [{"id": "wamid.HBg..."}].
Step 5: Webhook Configuration for Inbound Processing
To receive incoming customer replies and delivery receipts (sent, delivered, read), configure an HTTPS webhook:
- In your automation server (e.g. self-hosted n8n), deploy a Webhook endpoint:
https://automate.yourcompany.com/webhook/whatsapp. - In Meta App Settings → WhatsApp → Configuration, click Edit Webhook.
- Provide your Callback URL and a custom Verify Token string.
- Subscribe to the
messagesevent.
Now, whenever a customer texts your official WhatsApp number, Meta dispatches a signed JSON payload to your server in real-time with zero aggregator latency.
